The cumulative force of these moments\u2014including reversals of fortune prompting premodern displays of \u201ccare ethics\u201d and \u201cstoic\u201d extreme tolerance\u2014culminates in a teaching that takes the form of an extended analogy, a \u201cforest of (temporal) existence\u201d (<em>bhav\u0101\u1e6dav\u012bm<\/em>).
