THE VAI\u1e62\u1e46AVADHARMA\u015a\u0100STRA<\/em>: ITS STRUCTURE, SOURCES, AND AIMS <\/p>\n\n\n\n Not to be confused with the Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava-Dharma\u015b\u0101stra<\/em> also known as Vi\u1e63\u1e47usm\u1e5bti<\/em> edited by Patrick Olivelle in 2009, the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avadharma\u015b\u0101stra<\/em> is a work of approximately 1.700 verses that presents itself as a part of the Sanskrit epic Mah\u0101bh\u0101rata<\/em>. It is found in all Southern manuscripts used for the critical edition of the Mah\u0101bh\u0101rata<\/em> at the end of the \u0100\u015bvamedhikaparvan<\/em> (MBh 14, app. I, No. 4). In addition, as Reinhold Gr\u00fcnendahl has ascertained, there is also a Northern testimony of this text, namely, in a Nepalese palm-leaf manuscript from the 11th century CE (NGMPP ms. A27\/2). Gr\u00fcnendahl has also found that the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avadharma\u015b\u0101stra <\/em>contains a considerable number of pas\u00adsages with parallels in the Vi\u1e63\u1e47udharma<\/em>, but we also find passages with parallels in several other works, such das the Par\u0101\u015barasm\u1e5bti<\/em>, Manusm\u1e5bti<\/em>, Bhagavadg\u012bt\u0101<\/em> and other parts of the Mah\u0101bh\u0101rata<\/em>. In search of the author\u2019s (or authors\u2019) motivation for composing the Vai\u1e63\u1e47avadharma\u015b\u0101stra<\/em>, this paper will examine the structure of this work and its use of its sources.
