Ancient literature exhibits her elevated status from an important river to a goddess. Soon she became the epitome of the motherly love with which she cleanses the sins of her children approaching her with piety and prayers. These shifts can be observed through the <em>mah\u0101tmya<\/em>s in Epics and Pur\u0101\u1e47as and the <em>stotra<\/em>s sung with devotion. <em>Stotra<\/em>s help transcend the geographical boundaries of a river and move closer to her divine form. Various eulogies of Ga\u1e45g\u0101 like the ones attributed to sage V\u0101lmik\u012b, \u015aa\u1e45kar\u0101c\u0101rya or even up to V\u0101sudev\u0101nanda Sarasvati, all help in understanding the continuity of the faith, shifts in the devotional practices and beliefs.
